Designed with Love

Austin Air Systems was conceived more than three decades ago when the company’s founder, the late Richard Taylor, set out to help his wife, Joyce.

Joyce suffered from lifelong respiratory difficulties that did not improve with medications or dietary changes. Finally, the couple realized the air Joyce was breathing was contaminated.

Modeling after the technology already utilized in leading medical facilities, Richard set out to reproduce the only environment where Joyce felt relief – her hospital room. Using a combination of True Medical HEPA and Activated Carbon, Richard engineered a filter to specifically target particulate contamination and chemical toxicity.

Within one week, Joyce began sleeping undisturbed through the night.

At first, Richard built just a few units in his home workshop. The next year he built approximately 1,500 units in a leased workspace. As it turned out, Joyce was not the only one who benefited from Richard’s design. Tens of thousands of people began to experience relief as well. Today Austin Air Systems is the largest air cleaner manufacturing facility in the world.

America's Air Cleaner

Today, Austin Air remains the original maker of high-end filtration systems. Sold in more than 100 countries, we maintain the largest air cleaner manufacturing facility in the world, at 480,000 square feet. The company is proud to assemble everything in-house in Buffalo, New York.

Timeline

1990's

1990: Our flagship air purifier, the Austin HealthMate®, is released. Using true medical grade HEPA and granular activated carbon. It is the first-ever domestic air purifier.

1992: Austin Air is featured in medical and health newsletters including Dr. Whitaker’s Health & Healing. Proven to remove 99.97% of particles larger than 0.3 microns and 99% of particles larger than 0.1 microns.

2000's

2000: The Austin HealthMate® undergoes extensive testing along with over 100 other air purifiers at Battelle Laboratories, Aberdeen, MD. It is selected as the top air purifier for chemical and VOC filtration.

2001: Post 911, Austin Air products are recommended by the Red Cross, FEMA, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to combat the negative health effects of ash, chemicals and VOCs released into the air after the attack.

2001: Austin Air is selected by the country’s number one children’s hospital, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, to take part in a clinical trial.

2002: Following the Battelle Labs tests, Austin Air is selected by the U. S. government for the largest deployment of air purifiers in the world.

Our units are used to protect residents of Anniston, Alabama during the elimination of chemical weapons.

2009: Austin Air is selected by Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore to carry out a clinical trial to measure how effectively Austin Air purifiers can reduce levels of indoor Nitrogen Dioxide.

2010's

2010: Austin Air partners with Johns Hopkins University for further clinical trials, the first to measure how using an Austin Air purifier improves indoor air quality for pregnant women or women with very young children, living with a smoker. And another, to investigate how using an Austin can help to improve symptoms for people suffering from COPD.

2010: Austin Air receives the California Environmental Protection Agency’s Air Resources Board certification. This confirms Austin Air purifiers are well under the standards for safe ozone emissions.

2010: Our Allergy Machine® is clinically proven by the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to help reduce children’s asthma symptoms and minimize visits to the ER.

2015: Austin Air partners with the University of Washington to measure how using an Austin Air purifier helps to improve air quality for children with asthma, living in the Yakima Valley.

2015: Our first trial with Johns Hopkins is published. Results show that running an Austin helps to improve air quality and reduce levels of Nitrogen Dioxide in the homes of people with gas stoves.

2016: The Austin Air HealthMate Plus® is deployed to thousands of residents of Porter Ranch, California, and the surrounding Aliso Canyon area, to help protect against the effects of the Southern California natural gas leak.

2018: The results of our second Johns Hopkins Study are published. Our air purifiers successfully reduced levels of nicotine in the home.

2019: We partnered with various organizations in the Boston area, including the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering, the East Boston Social Centers, AIRInc, and Blue Cross Blue Shield, to help improve air quality for residents living close to Logan International Airport in East Boston.

2020's

2020: We celebrate 30 years of clean air.

2020: The results of our trial with Washington University are published. The results of this trial support a number of other clinical trials we have been involved in. Removing pollutants from the home helps to improve children’s asthma symptoms, therefore reducing the number of asthma attacks and visits to the emergency room.

2021: The results of the Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering are published. The study shows that running an Austin helps to lower blood pressure for people exposed to pollution from vehicles.

2021: The results of a third study with Johns Hopkins are published. Results show that using an Austin Air purifier helps to improve symptoms for people suffering from COPD.

2021: Over 40,000 Austin Air purifiers are supplied to schools in Canada. Protecting around 1 million Canadian school children and staff.

Clean Air First Responders

In government tests, Austin Air outperformed more than 100 other air purifiers. Because of this, FEMA and the American Red Cross chose Austin during some of America’s most challenging times, including 9-11, Hurricane Katrina, Hurricane Sandy, and the 2015 SoCal gas leak in California.

For decades, Austin Air purifiers have helped filter the toxic mix of contaminants released into the air during wildfires. And more recently, we have been providing clean air to an unprecedented number of schools, hospitals, and businesses as they move to increase safety protocols during the COVID-19 pandemic.

How Austin Air Differs from Other Purifiers

Testing

The Medical Grade HEPA used in all Austin Air filters has been independently certified to remove 99.97% of particles. Product tests on flow and vapor, gas, and sub-micron particle removal have been performed by Battelle Laboratories, one of the world’s most respected testing laboratories for the Army Corp of Engineers at the U.S. Army Aberdeen Test Center.

Austin Air is the only air cleaner company to partner with research organizations to conduct clinical trials on our products. We’ve worked with organizations such as Johns Hopkins University, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington, and Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering.

Filter Specifications

An extensive review by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), compared all available air cleaning technologies. The organization determined the most-effective air purifiers are those that use a combination of both HEPA and Carbon.  Austin Air uses up to 15lbs of carbon and 60 sq ft of HEPA in its filters – more than anyone in the industry.

Nontoxic Materials

Austin Air Systems builds its machines with solid steel and nontoxic powder-coated paint, whereas nearly all other air purifiers on the market build their machines with a plastic frame, and they are painted. This often puts more harmful contaminants into the air. What’s more, the Austin purifiers do not produce off-gassing or harmful ozone.

Austin Air Is The Only Clinically Proven Manufacturer of Medical-Grade HEPA Air Purifiers

We’ve worked with organizations such as Johns Hopkins University, the American Academy of Pediatrics, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, the University of Washington, and Franklin W. Olin College of Engineering. Six clinical trials, six successful outcomes.
