As the weather turns colder, we’re spending much more time inside. It goes without saying that Covid-19 is still a concern, but now’s the time when we have to contend with colds and flu too. So its extra important that we keep an eye on our indoor air quality.

Modern homes trap pollutants inside

Modern homes are often very well insulated, with windows and doors sealed shut. This is a great way to keep the heating bills down, but it can play havoc with our indoor air quality. Viruses, dust and allergens remain trapped inside, with no means of escape.

Keep dust to a minimum

If you struggle with allergies, it’s important to keep dust and other indoor allergens to a minimum. Be sure to wash bedding regularly, and vacuum and dust thoroughly. To make cleaning easier, keep your home free of clutter, to stop dust from building up. And on days when the weather allows, open a window, to let some of that outdoor air in.

Watch out for mold!

Check for mold, particularly in high-risk areas such as bathrooms and basements. Mold thrives in damp warm spaces. If it’s not kept in check, mold will happily eat its way through your home, releasing spores and toxins into the air. To keep mold at bay, make sure your bathroom and basement are well ventilated. Good airflow keeps your home dry and prevents mold from taking hold.

Look after yourself!

A balanced diet, plenty of sleep and regular exercise will all help to keep you in shape and give you the best chance of staying healthy this winter. You may also want to consider supplementing your diet with Iron and Vitamins B, C and D during the winter months. Along with a healthy diet, supplements give your immune system a boost and help to fight off colds and flu.

Lessons learned from Covid-19

The arrival of Covid-19 has meant we’re all experts on how to slow the spread of viruses. We know that washing our hands, maintaining a distance and wearing a mask help to reduce the risk of catching Covid-19. But we can apply the same rules to other airborne viruses too, including colds and flu.
