Scientists from Japan believe that by moisturizing a baby’s skin in the first few weeks of life, parents could help to prevent conditions such as eczema and possibly even asthma and allergies.
The team from the Tokyo-based National Center for Child Health and Development, has observed that a baby’s skin can develop cracks if it is left to dry out it. When this happens their immune cells become exposed and irritants can get in causing the immune system to go into overdrive to help combat the irritants. It is this overactive immune response that can result in allergies such as atopic eczema. Babies that suffer from eczema early in life, often show signs of egg white allergies as well and can go on to later develop other issues such as asthma.
Keeping the skin moisturized, soft and free from irritants gives the baby’s immune system a chance to develop fully, with less interruption.
