As the vaccination program gathers momentum, many of the country’s largest organizations have confirmed that by September, most of their workforce will be back in person for at least some of the time. The majority of companies are doing all they can to keep staff safe but if you haven’t yet been informed of the changes in place where you work, here are a few questions to ask before you head back to your desk.

Is your company in the know when it comes to Covid-19 stats?

Are your employers in regular contact with the local health authority? The number of cases in the community will impact how your company reopens. High transmission rates will no doubt mean stricter measures and as numbers fall, restrictions can be relaxed.

Can you keep your distance in the office?

Has your work environment been adapted, to ensure you and your colleagues can maintain a 6ft distance? We are all well aware that crowded indoor areas will dramatically increase the risk of transmission. If space is tight, your employer may decide to implement a rotating schedule, to minimize the number of people in the office at any one time.

What extra cleaning procedures will be implemented?

We now know the main method of transmission for Covid-19 is airborne, therefore deep cleaning every surface is unlikely to minimize risk. However, high touch areas such as door handles and elevator buttons should be regularly cleaned.

What measures have been taken to improve indoor air quality?

There are a number of things we can do to increase ventilation and encourage a good circulation of air. Opening a window, running the HVAC, even using a desktop fan will help to improve air flow. However, to ensure the safe and effective removal of airborne contaminants, the CDC recommends the use of portable HEPA air purifiers. HEPA air filtration is guaranteed to remove 99.97% of all particles larger than 0.3 microns and 99% of all particles larger than 0.1 microns, including viruses and bacteria.

What if there is a future outbreak?

Putting the right measures in place now will not only protect us from the spread of Covid-19, they will also help to protect us against future outbreaks. This statement from Raymond Tellier, a physician and medical microbiologist at McGill University reflects the general opinion of the scientific community

“It will come again. I can assure you ….There are other viruses, some of them far more dangerous than the COVID coronavirus.”

Looking beyond Covid-19

Over the last few months we have all been focused on Covid-19 but the benefits of clean air at work go far beyond the pandemic. There have been a number of studies over the years to show that good air quality helps to boost performance at work and reduce the number of absences. Better working conditions, where staff feel safe and supported helps to increase staff retention and improve productivity, which benefits the company as a whole.
