Back in 2019 we reported on a study from Taiwan, that found a link between exposure to pollutants such as Nitrogen Dioxide, and sight loss.

Now scientists from the UK are taking that theory one stage further, as they investigate other types of air pollutants and how they can affect our sight.

There is no cure for ‘Age Related Macular Degeneration’

Age Related Macular Degeneration, also known as AMD, is the most common cause of visual impairment for people over 50 and although symptoms can be slowed down, there is no cure.

AMD affects vision in the center of the visual field. Sufferers may experience blurred or no vision in this area, making it impossible to read, drive or recognize faces. In fact, people with AMD have great difficulty carrying out many day-to-day tasks.

What causes AMD?

It is well established that AMD is associated with old age, smoking, and genetic make-up. As we learn more about the effects of air pollution, we realize it affects all aspects of our health. And it is this, that has led scientists to investigate how it can affect our sight too.

The British team looked at data from 1286 patients and found that even a small increase in PM2.5 was associated with an 8% increase in the number of people with AMD. The team believe this may be due to the relatively high blood flow going to the eye, making it particularly susceptible to the effects of pollution.

Indoor pollutants are also to blame

This study focused on pollution from vehicles, however one of the researchers, Professor Paul Foster, from the University College London, UK, believes indoor air pollution will also have a significant impact.

We suspect there’s a lot more that is relevant going on inside the house,” and he went on to say, “Anything that produces smoke is likely to be driving some of the risk.”
